Mike Kafka
Although it’s a pretty sweet gig for Mike Kafka as quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator on the Kansas City Chiefs, the former pro could be tempted by full control of an offense if the fit is right. The Carolina Panthers do have some impressive weapons to work with, although the offensive line needs to improve dramatically to make this team a more attractive destination.
Kafka has worked with and developed Patrick Mahomes into an MVP, Super Bowl winner, and the face of the league. But much will also depend on whether Eric Bieniemy finally gets a head coaching job this offseason regarding his potential availability.
Should an NFL team finally pull the trigger with Bieniemy, then Kafka could be in line to assume full command of the offense in Kansas City. Something that would be far more enticing than switching to the Panthers.
There is also Kafka’s ethos to consider. He is an ex-quarterback who is a keen believer in getting the football downfield quickly within the Chiefs’ high-octane passing attack, which is a scheme Matt Rhule wouldn’t be particularly keen on given his desire to run a lot more.
The benefits of acquiring someone like Kafka are there for all to see. But this might be something Carolina does not consider if Rhule has any say on the matter.
