Cam Erving – Carolina Panthers OT

The Carolina Panthers signing Cam Erving on the first day of free agency will go down in folklore. And not in a good way.

A former first-round pick out of Florida State, Erving has struggled to reach this level of expectation during his career so far. Although he does have a Super Bowl ring from his time with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Erving spent one season with the Dallas Cowboys before he was ditched. But the Panthers clearly felt they could turn him around and they were so confident, those in power give him a two-year deal for good measure.

Absolutely astonishing, really.

This has been another failed reclamation project for the coaching staff. Erving just hasn’t been at the races more often than not, both in terms of staying healthy and with less than stellar production on the field.

It’s back to the drawing board for Carolina in pursuit of finding a franchise left tackle. Something they haven’t had since Jordan Gross retired and it has been a revolving door ever since.

Erving was entering the last chance saloon regarding his career prospects with the Panthers. Judging by what we’ve seen this season, it is highly unlikely he’ll get the chance to be a prominent starter again.
