Carolina Panthers should start looking toward the draft

What better way to plan for the future than to start preparing for the draft early?

As I mentioned earlier, the Carolina Panthers don’t really have much to work with next year and don’t entirely know what they need to go after besides the fairly obvious issues at quarterback and the offensive line.

However, that doesn’t mean that the team can’t start preparing for what could be the most important draft in recent Panthers history. This squad is balanced precariously on the line between win now and develop and one bad draft could make the whole organization fall into years of middling play.

Getting this draft right is that important.

To be fair, it’s not like teams completely forget about the draft during the season. However, general manager Scott Fitterer does have to focus more on getting the team ready to win now if that possibility is available.

The important thing for Fitterer to do right now is to start really looking hard at what the team has and what this draft has to offer. Sadly the quarterback class is pretty weak, which makes the risks and questionable signings of the last offseason even more apparent.

If the leading front-office figure is as good as he and everyone else seems to think, there have to be some gems hidden somewhere. Having a full season of scouting under his belt, and the ability to fully shift focus a few weeks early should also go a long way toward proving whether or not that sentiment is well placed.

It’s time to move into the future, it just remains to be seen whether this staff is capable of leading Carolina where team owner David Tepper wants to go.
