Cam Newton‘s performance at the Miami Dolphins brought him crashing back down to earth after a sensational start to life back with the Carolina Panthers. The quarterback wasn’t helped by an anemic offensive line and conservative play-calling, but he can ill-afford the same sort of production down the stretch in pursuit of earning a new deal this spring.
Newton was in a reflective mood during his press availability this week. Keen to focus on the next game and not on the playoff talk that won’t go away despite Carolina’s 5-7 record.
The former Auburn star controls his own destiny, for now at least.
But the questions about what comes next for the player and the Panthers will linger for some time yet.
The Atlanta Falcons are giving up 247.8 yards per game through the air. So even though the Panthers want to adopt a run-first mentality, Newton could have a few chances to generate significant gains distributing the football providing the protection is there.
He’ll have another bumper crowd at Bank of America Stadium cheering him on. Although this didn’t come with a positive result against the Washington Football Team, it was a pleasing first start overall for Newton.
With all this in mind, backing Newton to throw more than 1.5 touchdowns at +180 (bet $100 to win $180) seems like a solid wager if everything clicks into place.
