As stated previously, one would have to be living under a rock to not notice Matt Rhule’s clear desire to run the football. This philosophy was not working out with the recently departed offensive coordinator Joe Brady, but Jeff Nixon has worked under the head coach before and knows exactly what’s required from a scheme standpoint.
This might be more complicated to install with no real force in between the tackles and Christian McCaffrey on season-ending injured/reserve, but the Carolina Panthers do have two running backs in Ameer Abdullah and Chuba Hubbard who are capable of doing damage.
Abdullah’s made a solid impression since joining the organization just one game after he featured against the Panthers for the Minnesota Vikings. He is elusive in tight windows and has some encouraging explosiveness if opportunities arise in the open field.
Hubbard should get the majority of carries.
There is also the option of using Cam Newton a lot running the football.
However, the Panthers would be wise to utilize Abdullah’s strengths early and often to set the tone against the Atlanta Falcons.
This could be Abdullah’s best game in a Carolina uniform so far. Tipping him to score a touchdown at any stage of the game and for the Panthers to win at +380 (bet $100 to win $380) is a tempting long-shot to consider.
