Jeremy Chinn’s best position?
Moving Jeremy Chinn back to the position where he starred in college was a natural transition despite the player thriving as an outside linebacker during his rookie campaign with the Carolina Panthers. The former second-round pick was an absolute revelation in 2020 and was unfortunate not to win NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, which controversially went to defensive end Chase Young of the Washington Football Team.
Chinn has not been as impactful on the backend. Although the Southern Illinois product is coming down to the line of scrimmage plenty to assist on blitz packages and against the run.
If there was one knock on Chinn’s game, it’s his lack of reliability in coverage. He’s given up five touchdowns when targeted this season – one less than during the previous campaign – so those in power need to decide whether to keep the player at safety long-term or revert him back to the second level to provide assistance.
This would leave the Panthers drastically short of quality options on the backend. Especially considering Sean Chandler and Juston Burris are both out of contract this spring.
It’s yet another conundrum the Panthers need to figure out. One that will have big ramifications on Chinn – a player that has exceptional physical attributes.
