4 reasons Sam Darnold should not start again for the Panthers in 2021

Sam Darnold is back at practice, but the Carolina Panthers would be wise not to start the troubled quarterback again during the 2021 season.
Things seem to be unraveling quickly for the Carolina Panthers after such a promising start to the season. Matt Rhule is coming under increasing pressure for his game plans and adjustments, with personnel decisions also under severe scrutiny in key areas such as the quarterback position.
This revolving door is a constant source of frustration and indicates the Panthers might not be fully aware of what the plan is right now. It could become even more complicated in the coming weeks with the news Sam Darnold has been cleared for some practice reps and Carolina also announced their intent to activate the signal-caller from the reserve/injured list.
Darnold was the offseason’s big trade from the New York Jets after failed bids for Matthew Stafford and Deshaun Watson. A strong start was instantly followed by the same complications that blighted the former first-round pick’s time at MetLife Stadium and a catastrophic outing in Week 9 against the New England Patriots was the final straw for many fans.
With Cam Newton back in the fold, it’s a complex situation the Panthers must handle with care. Especially with almost nothing left to play for this season other than pride.
Those in power opted to enforce Darnold’s fifth-year option with a fully guaranteed $18.85 million before he’d even taken the field. So unless they find a willing trade partner, they might be forced to keep him on the roster next season.
Despite this obvious problem, here are four reasons why the Panthers should not start Darnold again in 2021.
