Cam Newton’s deceptive first half

Although Cam Newton’s first-half stats were nothing to shout about, it was a solid performance overall in the circumstances. The Carolina Panthers were down 17-8 at the break, but there were signs of life towards the end of the second quarter when a Jeremy Chinn interception was quickly followed by yet another rushing score from the signal-caller.

Newton missed some opportunities – most notably underthrowing a deep ball to D.J. Moore that could have been a huge gain – but there were also plenty of encouraging signs the former NFL MVP could solidify his status as the team’s man under center beyond this season.

One thing that stood out was Newton’s conviction under pressure. The offensive line gave up plenty of ground in key moments, which simply has to change in 2022 and something that left the signal-caller working on the fly for large periods.

Newton’s first-half stats don’t really tell the full story:

  • 6/14 passing (42.85%)
  • 39 passing yards
  • 0 TDs
  • 0 INTs
  • 1 sack against
  • 32 rushing yards (9 carries)
  • 1 rushing TD
  • 50.3 passer rating (ESPN)

Yes, some throws were questionable. But it was deceptively good overall for Newton and the Panthers showed some resolve, at the very least.
