Which upcoming free agents could the Carolina Panthers potentially extend on the cheap during the offseason?
The Carolina Panthers are now officially out of the playoff picture following their loss at the Buffalo Bills in Week 15. Although anyone that’s watched the team in recent weeks was fully aware of just what a pipe dream postseason football was for this group.
Attention is now quickly turning to what promises to be another eventful offseason. The future of many veterans hangs in the balance and if things keep trending on a downward slope, team owner David Tepper might be left with no option other than to completely reset and relieve head coach Matt Rhule of his duties.
This would be a big call to make after just two years. Rhule demonstrated real progress in Year 3 during his time at both Baylor and Temple, so even though Carolina doesn’t seem to be anywhere close to legitimate Super Bowl contention right now, he could still get a reprieve.
The Panthers have just over $29 million in salary-cap space this spring. Of course, it might end up being much more if certain sacrifices and early releases occur regarding current roster members.
Players such as Stephon Gilmore and Haason Reddick should take priority given their production. There is also a complex situation at quarterback to consider as part of the team’s short and long-term planning.
It’s essential for the Panthers to get every move right regarding recruitment and other contract negotiations. Here are four players Carolina should extend on the cheap.
