6 prospects the Panthers should monitor in college football playoffs

Brad Hawkins – S (Michigan)
Getting additional help at the safety position is something else for the Carolina Panthers to consider this offseason. Jeremy Chinn’s move to the backend has brought another 100-tackle campaign, but there hasn’t been much in the way of consistency alongside the former Southern Illinois star thanks in no small part to Juston Burris’ ongoing injury problems.
There is also a chance that Carolina switches Chinn back to the second level in 2022, although nothing has been confirmed as yet. If the coaching staff opt to go down this route, then they’ll need another hard-hitting player to replace his production.
Brad Hawkins has been hugely consistent for the Michigan Wolverines over the last three seasons. He’s racked up 172 tackles, eight passes defended, two forced fumbles, and seven tackles for loss during his career, playing a significant role in Jim Harbaugh’s men rising to prominence this season.
Hawkins is a strong presence against the run and his previous experience as a wide receiver in high school serves the prospect well in coverage. There are some elements to his game that need work – especially when it comes to route anticipation – but his mentality dictates more could be on the way once he gets to the pros.
The Panthers should watch Hawkins closely when Michigan clashes with Georgia. But again, a Day 2 pick might be required if they identify the player as someone who could help them moving forward.
