Carolina Panthers trade down from No. 86 overall

Another trade. This time, the Indianapolis Colts swap places with the Carolina Panthers to get their desired choice. The deal basically swaps a fifth-round pick for a seventh, which is great math whichever way one looks at it.

Scott Fitterer did well from his late rounders in 2021 barring a couple of errors. Carolina will be hoping for similar success next time around.

Finding a long-term partner for Jeremy Chinn at the safety position is something the Panthers need to address this offseason. There doesn’t appear to be a desire for the former Southern Illinois standout to become an outside linebacker despite his phenomenal rookie success, so acquiring a college prospect capable of contributing right away is an absolute must.

Leon O’Neal certainly ticks a lot of boxes. The Texas A&M stud is a commanding force on the backend, with his ability to come down and assist at the second level is another intriguing element to his game that shouldn’t be ignored.

O’Neal plays fast and physically, just like Chinn. He is a smash-mouth, downhill prospect that also boasts some eye-catching skills in coverage for good measure.

Outstanding leadership is another trait that O’Neal has in abundance. Simply put, this would be a real steal at this stage of the draft and something the Panthers would undoubtedly consider.
