After another pathetic performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is all hope now lost for Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule?

If the Carolina Panthers were hoping to pull off a major upset in Week 16 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it was evident from pretty early on that wasn’t going to be the case. Another dismal effort against the defending Super Bowl champions saw the home team heavily beaten during their final game of 2021 at Bank of America Stadium, which came in front of a sparse crowd and saw boos ring out at various stages.

This piled yet more pressure on Matt Rhule from media and fans. Although the head coach seemed confident in his position after declaring team owner David Tepper was highly supportive during their chat post-game.

Just how much can be drawn from this is uncertain. But two respected reporters – Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports and Joe Person from The Athletic – seem to believe that Rhule will be given a third year to try and turn things around.

Not exactly what most were hoping for. Admitting defeat is not something Tepper is going to do willingly with his first hire and if Rhule provides the billionaire with a concise offseason plan that he likes, then it might just come with a reprieve.

There is clearly something amiss in Carolina right now. Their 3-0 start has been followed by a 2-10 run that has them staring yet another high-end draft pick in the face and almost no signs of the progression anticipated.

Rhule’s exhausted every scapegoat imaginable. From offensive coordinator Joe Brady’s firing to his backtracked criticism of Cam Newton – it reeks of passing the buck and taking attention away from the real problem.

Things look bleak. But is all hope lost entirely?
