4 critical observations from Sam Darnold’s performance at the Bucs

Sam Darnold faces an uncertain future
There is nothing more Sam Darnold can do. It’s now up to those in power to decide whether or not he should get another opportunity to lead the Carolina Panthers under center in 2022.
Acquiring Darnold from the New York Jets was a gamble that backfired in a big way. But with just $28.3 million in cap space and the signal-caller under contract for a guaranteed $18.85 million, it would be a huge shock if he wasn’t on the roster in some capacity.
The question of whether the Panthers will go after another big trade, acquire a prospect from the NFL draft or bring in a veteran to compete with Darnold has yet to be determined. But make no mistake, Carolina will explore every possible avenue in pursuit of finally resolving some ongoing complications at the most important position on the field.
It’s a work in progress for Darnold, who still has footwork issues and gets panicked far too much in the pocket when pressure arrives. But the NFL is a ruthless business and with certain traits not getting any better after four years, it won’t be much longer before his potential is given up on.
In truth, that time may have already come.
Matt Rhule hung his hat on Darnold. And another failed personnel move calls into question the former Baylor man’s ability to evaluate talent at the pro level.
All Darnold can do is wait to hear his fate and just what the Panthers are going to do in terms of bolstering their options. But at the moment, nothing can be ruled out entirely.
