5 potential destinations for Stephon Gilmore in 2022 free agency
By Dean Jones
Where could Stephon Gilmore end up next if the Carolina Panthers decide to let the All-Pro cornerback leave in 2022 free agency?
Acquiring Stephon Gilmore via trade from the New England Patriots was a significant coup by the Carolina Panthers during the 2021 season. The prolific cornerback was expected to be a hot commodity on the free-agent market after Bill Belichick leaked their intentions to release the player, but those in power gave up a sixth-round selection in 2023 to ensure they brought him into the organization.
Gilmore was a revelation on the field once he finally recovered from a torn quad. His impact within the locker room also benefitted younger members of the roster such as Jaycee Horn, C.J. Henderson, and Keith Taylor Jr. during a critical stage of their development.
Carolina has a big decision to make regarding Gilmore this offseason. It appears as if it’s a straight choice between the All-Pro or Donte Jackson as to who gets paid, which is a real dilemma and one that the front office has to get right.
With this in mind, here are five potential destinations Gilmore could end up in 2022 free agency.
Team No. 1
Stephon Gilmore could re-sign with the Carolina Panthers
Extending Stephon Gilmore cannot – and shouldn’t – be ruled out by the Carolina Panthers. This is an area he grew up and played college football, with his family residing in the region to give the player a feeling of comfort he hasn’t had during a glittering career.
That’s all well and good. But it doesn’t really mean much when it comes down to the business aspect of the NFL.
The Panthers don’t have much money to go around. Unless Gilmore is one of their top priorities, it could see the veteran leave and take his chances elsewhere.
Another element to consider is Gilmore wanting to be part of a contending team at this stage of his career. Something Carolina seems some way off at the present moment.
