5 potential destinations for Stephon Gilmore in 2022 free agency
By Dean Jones
Stephon Gilmore could join the Dallas Cowboys
Jerry Jones is always looking to make a big-name splash in free agency. The more marketable players he has on the Dallas Cowboys, the longer they’ll continue to dominate national debate shows and remain one of the NFL’s biggest-selling points despite not winning a Super Bowl since the 1990s.
Trevon Diggs has generated a substantial amount of headlines for his interceptions this season. However, it’s also worth remembering that the former second-round pick out of Alabama is also conceding significant yardage in the passing game that’s among the league’s highest.
Although Diggs could make further strides in Year 3 of his professional career, adding someone like Gilmore into the mix is a mouth-watering proposition. Not only from a talent standpoint on the field but what his leadership and counsel could do for Diggs’ development.
The Cowboys don’t appear that far away from lifting another Vince Lombardi Trophy. They might even do it this season if everything comes together at just the right time.
Signing Gilmore in free agency would give their hopes in 2022 a significant shot in the arm. But one potential stumbling block could be financial with almost no salary-cap space to utilize, which also applies to the Carolina Panthers to a lesser extent.
