Could the Carolina Panthers join David Njoku sweepstakes in free agency?

Could the Carolina Panthers enter the David Njoku sweepstakes if the tight end leaves the Cleveland Browns in 2022 free agency?
Although Tommy Tremble showed flashes of promise for the Carolina Panthers during his rookie campaign, those in power might be on the lookout for additional assistance at the position with Ian Thomas out of contract and unlikely to come back. One name that could enter consideration is David Njoku, who might be heading for the exit door unless an extension comes his way from the Cleveland Browns in the coming weeks.
Njoku has all the athletic abilities in the world. But a combination of strong depth and a run-first offense meant opportunities were limited for the former first-round pick in 2021.
There was talk of Njoku potentially being traded over the last two years, which the player also welcomed once upon a time before reaffirming his commitment to the organization. However, there might not be a better time to cash in with a team that could offer more in the way of targets moving forward.
Tremble could end up being the complete tight end package. But asking him to perform to such a level during the early stages of his development is asking too much for the third-round pick out of Notre Dame.
Someone like Njoku could instantly fill the void left by Thomas if he departs as expected. He would also be a substantial upgrade on anything the Panthers have possessed at the position from a pass-catching standpoint since Greg Olsen left for the Seattle Seahawks.
Carolina Panthers could face stiff competition for David Njoku
According to FanSided‘s national NFL insider Matt Lombardo, there is expected to be a robust market for Njoku if he hits free agency, which could make things difficult for the Panthers if they identify the Miami product as a player of interest.
"“The David Njoku market is expected to be pretty strong, in a loaded tight-end market. Viewed by some as the Dalton Schultz consolation prize, if the Cowboys somehow don’t bring Schultz back.”"
Considering the lack of consistency at the quarterback position, a head coach on the hot seat, and significant reinforcements needed on the offensive line, the Panthers have their work cut out convincing free agents to join them this offseason. If Njoku has an offer or two from elsewhere, he’ll likely go with that rather than risk it in Carolina.
There is also the financial aspect to consider when looking at this potential signing. The Panthers have around $28.3 million in cap space to utilize – which isn’t great – and according to Spotrac, Njoku is set to command an annual sum of $6.9 million on a four-year, $27.69 million deal.
That might be a little rich for Carolina’s blood considering their need to re-sign some established veterans and strengthen problem areas. However, the benefits of acquiring a physical specimen such as Njoku are there for all to see.
Whether it’s in free agency or via the draft, anyone prominent tight end should be a necessity for the Panthers this offseason. Njoku is one of the premier targets should the Browns let him walk and although unlikely, general manager Scott Fitterer should put in a call, at the very least.
Njoku signing off on a move to Carolina is up for debate. But he should be a top target nonetheless.
