Although things didn’t go according to plan for Cam Newton this season, the Carolina Panthers should still re-sign the quarterback in 2022.

Bringing Cam Newton back was a shrewd business move by the Carolina Panthers. The team was regressing at an alarming rate and the former NFL MVP’s return completely shifted the dynamic across the organization when it was needed most.

Things couldn’t have gone much better for Newton early on, contributing touchdowns on his first two plays at the Arizona Cardinals and showing further signs of life during his first official start against the Washington Football Team at an electric Bank of America Stadium.

It didn’t quite go to plan after that. And it came as no surprise to see head coach Matt Rhule go back to Sam Darnold – a player the Panthers gave up three draft selections to acquire from the New York Jets and trigger his fifth-year option without playing a single competitive snap.

Seeing Newton on the sidelines while Darnold continued to go through some severe complications was just sad. The Auburn product is now facing an uncertain future once again and although the door hasn’t been completely closed, it would be a big surprise if he was extended.

However, there might be some benefits to giving Newton another shot. And it’s not like things could get any worse considering what Darnold managed to produce during his first season with the team.

With this in mind, here are four reasons why the Panthers should re-sign Newton this offseason.
