Cam Newton is the better bridge option

The Carolina Panthers need a long-term solution at the quarterback position. But with $24 million in cap space and no Day 2 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, they might have to wait until next year to put this sort of plan in place.

Sam Darnold has already proven he isn’t the answer barring a turnaround of epic proportions this offseason. So bringing Cam Newton back might provide the organization with a more competent bridge option before potentially landing a big fish or a top draft prospect in 2023.

It would be difficult to move Darnold at any stage thanks to his fully-guaranteed salary of $18.85 million. A problem Carolina brought on themselves and are now paying the price in a big way.

Much will depend on the money Newton is after during any upcoming negotiations. But it’s hard to deny that he might be a better solution to the constant revolving door at quarterback than Darnold will ever be.

One could point to Darnold’s age and the fact he might develop further. But the former USC star is now entering Year 5 of his professional career and the same problems keep emerging regarding processing and footwork despite constant coaching in an attempt to improve these areas.

Newton might not be the force of old. But he’s arguably the best option Carolina has right now.
