5 big gambles that backfired on the Carolina Panthers in 2021

Carolina Panthers continued giving Matt Rhule too much power
In order to keep Matt Rhule from becoming head coach of the New York Giants, team owner David Tepper gave the former Baylor and Temple man the final say on personnel decisions.
This was enough to prise Rhule away from the college ranks on a seven-year, $62 million deal in the hope his program building could make a smooth transition to the NFL. Sadly, things haven’t gone according to plan and there are many who believe he should have already been removed from the post.
It’s hard to admit you’re wrong. Tepper is finding that out to his cost this offseason and there is now growing pressure on the billionaire to face the music and explain the thought process behind keeping Rhule with the Carolina Panthers.
There’s clearly something amiss when it comes to pro personnel evaluation. And considering the Panthers now have respected figures such as Scott Fitterer and Dan Morgan in the front office, now is the time to take this privilege away from Rhule.
Carolina still doesn’t know if Rhule can properly coach seasoned professionals in the pro ranks, which is astounding in Year 3. Something they need to find out one way or another and if that means handing roster-building responsibilities to the front office, then so be it.
Rhule had his shot and failed. Taking a step back while still having a say is the only realistic avenue moving forward.
