Carolina Panthers select Josh Rivas – OL (Kansas State)

Rounding off the draft with another offensive lineman would also help considering the Carolina Panthers have some real issues in terms of depth across the board. Starting so many different combinations in 2021 was a damning indictment of this and something that those in power have to address as a matter of urgency this offseason.

Finding gems in the later rounds has been a core component of Scott Fitterer’s achievements in the NFL both with the Seattle Seahawks and in his first year as general manager. If someone with the enticing skills and experience of Josh Rivas is still available by this point, it represents a low-risk, high-reward pick-up by the Panthers.

Rivas has an aggressive blocking style that’s really stood out during his time at Kansas State. His length is a real asset when it comes to pass protection and the player’s footwork is also something working in his favor ahead of the all-important assessment process.

As is the case with prospects taken at this stage of the draft, Rivas does have some flaws. Most notably when it comes to movement and consistency dealing with speedier pass-rushers on the edge or interior.

Rivas couldn’t be classed as a Day 1 starter by any stretch. But he could end up being a nice depth piece in the very near future providing his transition is a smooth one.
