Carolina Panthers have one less divisional rival to worry about

Although the Carolina Panthers aren’t exactly in the strongest position themselves after their third-straight five-win season, a landmark figure such as Sean Payton leaving the New Orleans Saints could improve their divisional chances providing the right recruitments are brought in this offseason.

When long-standing head coaches depart any organization, it’s usually followed by a period of transition. Payton meant so much to the Saints on and off the field and even with a lack of consistency at quarterback in 2021, he still managed to get New Orleans to a 9-8 record in the face of adversity.

Now that Payton has decided to put away the headset – at least for the time being – it could result in a significant drop-off from the Saints unless a bombshell appointment is made. This bears even more significance when one considers New Orleans is currently $74 million over the cap for 2022.

This no doubt played a role in Payton deciding to move on. And it would be a huge surprise if they were anything like contenders in the NFC South next season.

Couple this with Matt Ryan’s presence on the Atlanta Falcons and Tom Brady’s status, the Panthers might not get a better opportunity to make some real strides in 2022. However, putting the right pieces in place before competitive action begins is something Carolina has to do in the coming months.
