5 worst contracts on the Carolina Panthers in 2022
By Dean Jones
Christian McCaffrey – Carolina Panthers RB
- $14.3 million in 2022
The Carolina Panthers clearly have a dilemma on their hands regarding Christian McCaffrey. Despite the running back still putting up lofty numbers, another injury-hit campaign has cast further doubt on the decision to hand the player such a lucrative deal before the 2020 campaign.
McCaffrey is another example of the danger that comes with paying running backs. A decision that will cost the Panthers in a big way unless his touches or the way he’s utilized changes in some fashion.
This is something the Panthers have to get right. They can ill-afford McCaffrey missing a considerable period of time in 2022 and after appearing just 10 times in two seasons, this is obviously a distinct possibility.
Here’s what McCaffrey is owed over the next four years as his contract formally kicks in from 2022 onwards:
- 2022: $14.3 million
- 2023: 17.7 million
- 2024: 17.7 million
- 2025: $13.6 million
Carolina does have an out with McCaffrey’s deal after the upcoming campaign that represents a saving of around $26 million, according to Spotrac. This is the time when trading the All-Pro becomes more realistic providing there are no further complications on the health front.
This has to be a collective effort from McCaffrey and the coaching staff. Some common ground has to be found for the good of the team and the player, it’s just that simple.
