5 Carolina Panthers players who will be grossly overpaid in 2022
By Dean Jones
Robby Anderson – Carolina Panthers WR
- 2022 cap number: $16.83 million
Robby Anderson is getting WR1 money in 2022 after the Carolina Panthers gave him a two-year contract extension prior to the campaign. The wideout will count a whopping $16.83 million against the cap next season and judging by what we saw from the player last time around, he might not be worth such a huge financial commitment.
Anderson looked like a lost figure for most of 2021. There was no real chemistry with quarterback Sam Darnold despite their previous relationship on the New York Jets and if the USC product is still under center, then it might see similar complications emerge.
There is no denying the fact Anderson regressed. His early-season efforts were littered with some individual mistakes and although things improved slightly down the stretch, just 519 receiving yards were the lowest total of his career to date.
Whether the Panthers restructure Anderson’s deal this offseason remains to be seen. Trading the Temple product seems unlikely considering the money involved, so new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo has a job on his hands getting the veteran and Darnold on the same page.
Hopefully, Anderson can return to the form that saw him hit the ground running in 2020. But that is far from guaranteed and it will be interesting to see how it all plays out.
