6 prospects on defense the Panthers should watch at 2022 Senior Bowl
By Dean Jones
Roger McCreary – CB (Auburn)
The thought of drafting a cornerback might not fill any fan with joy after some substantial recruitment in this area both before and during the season. However, if the Carolina Panthers lose Donte Jackson and Stephon Gilmore in free agency, it becomes a positional group of slight concern moving forward despite some promising young talent on the roster.
Carolina’s general manager Scott Fitterer is always keen to go with the best player available. Although the Panthers might not have this luxury considering their extreme need to strengthen the offensive line in the coming weeks.
However, someone like Roger McCreary might alter their train of thought. Especially if they need one more reliable presence without the two out-of-contract free agents.
McCreary has a are blend of speed and agility. The Auburn standout thrives in press coverage and also possesses the fluidity in his hips that could see him become an NFL star in no time at all.
There is every chance McCreary will be a first-round selection this spring. Perhaps not in the top-15, but certainly towards the end when he could land on a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
He might not have the ideal height and length normally associated with successful cornerbacks at the next level. But McCreary plays much bigger than his size suggests and although it would be a major bombshell if the Panthers went down this route, it cannot be ruled out entirely.
