John Miller – Carolina Panthers OG

"“Sacks happen.”"

That will be the statement for which John Miller’s time with the Carolina Panthers will be remembered. And make no mistake, if the team wants to make any sort of improvement regarding their protection, then bringing him back is simply not an option.

There were some eyebrows raised when the Panthers opted to give Miller a one-year extension after a turbulent first season following his move from the Cincinnati Bengals. This was probably due to financial constraints and a lack of preferred options, but the former third-round pick did not make the most of his chance, to put it mildly.

Miller was nothing short of pathetic in pass protection. He gave up no fewer than seven sacks and conceded three penalties from 656 snaps in 2021, which resulted in an inevitably bad 52.1 grade from Pro Football Focus as a result of his efforts.

The lineman was benched for their season finale at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after a press conference where Miller displayed no accountability for his failings. If those in power had any sense whatsoever, they should show him the door later this spring.

If this scenario comes to fruition, then Miller doesn’t exactly have the tape to convince another organization to bring him on board. So this might be it for his career when it’s all said and done.
