Cleveland Browns

It appears as if the Cleveland Browns are going to give Baker Mayfield one last chance to prove himself worthy of a bumper long-term financial commitment from the organization.

The former No. 1 overall selection out of Oklahoma had his fifth-year option picked up. But after another inconsistent campaign, it would be wise for the team to let things play out in 2022 and take it from there.

Cleveland vastly underachieved last season. Considered by some to be a lively contender for the Super Bowl, the Browns didn’t even make the postseason and even though there were other factors in play, Mayfield is now under the biggest microscope imaginable.

If the Browns want to get themselves a security blanket who could also assist in specialist packages, then Cam Newton might be the answer. Mayfield might not like the thought of another big personality entering the locker room, but he could learn a lot from the veteran about what it takes to go from a good signal-caller to a great one.

Mayfield might not take such advice. However, if the player wants to extend his stay in Cleveland beyond this season, then he needs to change his approach.

This would also give the Browns an opportunity to utilize Newton on short-yardage and red-zone situations should Kevin Stefanski see fit. Cleveland’s offense relies heavily on the run – an area where the quarterback still thrives and could see a highlight or two behind a stout offensive line when healthy.
