Former Panthers OC Joe Brady could have the last laugh in Buffalo
By Dean Jones
Could former Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Joe Brady get the last laugh after he landed a tremendous job on the Buffalo Bills?
Things ended up on a sour note between Joe Brady and the Carolina Panthers. The former offensive coordinator came into the organization with a big reputation after contributing significantly to LSU‘s national championship-winning campaign, with the likes of Justin Jefferson, Ja’Marr Chase, Terrace Marshall Jr., and Joe Burrow all benefitting enormously from his presence as passing game coordinator.
Brady had some flashes during his first season calling plays in Carolina. This also saw the progressive young mind get some head coaching interviews without doing quite enough to earn a top job.
The introduction of Sam Darnold and another injury to Christian McCaffery saw the Panthers struggle on offense once again. A dismal offensive line made things difficult for Brady to generate any sort of momentum, with plays being kept to their most basic and something opposing teams figured out pretty quickly.
Perhaps the final straw between Brady and Matt Rhule was a clash in personalities about running the football more. The head coach clearly needed a sacrifice with the team plummeting into oblivion at the bye week and his play-caller was the one to go.
Inevitably, Brady was overlooked for head coaching interviews this year. A distinct fall from grace for a man who was regarded as one of the brightest young coaches anywhere in the league once upon a time.

Everything happens for a reason, of so they say. And it just so happens that Brady might have found the perfect landing spot to reignite his career after being appointed as the quarterbacks’ coach with the Buffalo Bills, who are led by former Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott and boast one of the best signal-callers in the business for good measure.
Working with Josh Allen is going to be a revelation for Brady after spending the last two years trying to galvanize the likes of Darnold, Teddy Bridgewater, and P.J. Walker. If he manages to take the player’s game to even greater heights, then his chances of attaining a coordinator position or even becoming a head coach down the line improve dramatically.
With Rhule under increasing fire about his capabilities to lead an NFL team to prominence, Brady is probably thankful he was removed and it’s not like the Panthers improved with Jeff Nixon calling the plays under the former Baylor man’s watchful eye.
Whether it will change or not with Ben McAdoo is undetermined. But if it doesn’t, then there could be huge changes in Carolina this time next year.
As for Brady, this is a fantastic opportunity.
One he cannot squander.
It’s the chance to work with an elite quarterback and boost back up his own reputation in the process. The Bills aren’t too far away from winning a Super Bowl after two close misses in recent years, so if Brady can help Allen in any way, the better their chances will be moving forward.
Things just didn’t work out for Brady in Carolina, even though there were mitigating factors at play. However, it’s far too soon to be writing him off just yet and who knows, he might just get the last laugh after all.
