Projecting every 2022 draft pick before Carolina Panthers are on the clock
By Dean Jones
Aidan Hutchinson – DE (Michigan)
There are a number of ways the Detroit Lions could go with this pick. Much like the Carolina Panthers, they could do with a long-term solution at the quarterback position once Jared Goff becomes surplus to requirements, but they also need to bolster a defense that did show some signs of life down the stretch.
If the Jacksonville Jaguars go offensive line at No. 1, then the Lions have the luxury of choosing between the two best edge rushers in this class. Aidan Hutchinson’s exceptional season with the Michigan Wolverines makes him the call, although a lot could change between now and when it’s time to make their decision final.
Hutchinson has a Joey Bosa vibe to his play, which is certainly not a bad thing. His explosiveness and relentless attitude resulted in 14 sacks and an incredible 16.5 tackles for loss last season and if he stands out at the NFL Scouting Combine, then he could very well be the first name called when it’s all said and done.
Consistent pass-rushers are hard to find. If Detroit isn’t convinced that any of the incoming college quarterbacks can ever become solid pros, then they’d be wise to take the best player available.
That might be Hutchinson at the present time. And this is also a clear need for the Lions that they need to fill at some stage during the offseason.
