4 big draft gambles the Carolina Panthers could take at No. 6 overall
Carolina Panthers could gamble on Malik Willis – QB (Liberty)
Malik Willis is the most electric quarterback in this class. He’s also coming off a big senior season at Liberty and the prospect’s stock increased heavily after the Reese’s Senior Bowl, which built further momentum at just the right time.
Everybody knows about his elite mobility, but Willis’ arm is alive and throwing missiles. Overall, the Liberty product’s talent is above average and his release is unbelievably quick.
He does everything fast when he’s in the pocket or out of it. Willis is a highly attractive prospect, but his negatives could stop the Carolina Panthers from taking him at No. 6.
Willis has a live arm, but the accuracy is scarce at times. He also tends to stare down one wide receiver, and this could lead to turnovers in the NFL.
This is not an immediate solution to Carolina’s starting problem. Willis is more of a developmental quarterback that has many great traits to be a franchise player with additional time to develop.
It’s best for him to sit a year, watch a veteran quarterback play, and learn the playbook. With the right coaching and guidance Willis could be an outstanding player in the NFL following the footsteps of his mentor Cam Newton.
