Cam Newton’s influence evident within 2022 NFL Draft prospects
By Dean Jones
A talented group of quarterbacks entering the 2022 NFL Draft this year has close links to Cam Newton, a former No. 1 overall selection by the Carolina Panthers.
Although Cam Newton might be heading into the twilight of his career, his impact and overall influence won’t soon be forgotten. He transformed the Carolina Panthers from also-rans into title contenders in a short space of time, propelling them into the media spotlight with an electrifying style of play that completely transformed the perception surrounding quarterbacks and the way they could produce.
Newton‘s status on the Panthers following his sensational return prior to their Week 10 success at the Arizona Cardinals is unclear. It’s highly debatable whether or not he’ll be extended considering the presence of Sam Darnold, who failed to develop as expected after Carolina gave up three draft selections to the New York Jets to bring him on board.
Darnold was named the starter once again upon returning from the reserve/injured list. He is also guaranteed $18.85 million in 2022 after the Panthers picked up his fifth-year option.
This could bring finality to Newton’s glittering spell in Carolina. Something the former No. 1 overall selection, Heisman Trophy winner, and NFL MVP appeared to fully understand given how reflective and even nostalgic he was during an emotional exit presser.
Even if Newton walks away into the sunset and perhaps out of the league entirely, the player can relax safe in the knowledge that he gave absolutely everything and inspired the next generation looking to follow in his footsteps.
Newton’s influence can be seen within some top-end recruits entering the league from the college ranks this year. A further indication in the esteem in which he is held.
Cam Newton has impacted three top 2022 draft QBs
Two such prospects expected to come into first-round consideration spent time honing their craft at Newton’s 7v7 camp, which provides aspiring players with an opportunity to learn from some high-quality coaches and even the man himself.
Sam Howell and Malik Willis both participated in the camp during their initial development, with the Liberty signal-caller – who also attended Auburn and grew up near Newton’s hometown – extremely complimentary on the advice he had been given from someone that was at the peak of his powers at the time.
"“It was definitely cool. He went to the Super Bowl and he’s like from 15 minutes from where I live, so that’s cool. He always gave me little nuggets of information that I could keep with me for the rest of my life. He’s definitely been a big part of that.”"
Not only this, but Kenny Pickett was also a big fan of Newton’s based on a tweet that surfaced from 2013 regarding a purchase of the player’s replica cleats.
Newton was a cultural reset in Carolina. And it’s clear he has had a significant impact on three top talents that could become solid starters one day in the right fit.
There is a possibility one of them might end up on the Panthers, too. Despite the obvious need for offensive line reinforcements, there might not be a better chance for Carolina to shoot their shot at a potential franchise signal-caller that could sit behind Darnold in 2022 before assuming command under center.
These plans might not include Newton when it’s all said and done. But his legacy is sure to live through the ages.
