Which quarterback situations across the league could actually be worse than what the Carolina Panthers are currently experiencing this offseason?

Another failed gamble by the Carolina Panthers at quarterback played a leading role behind their eventual demise in 2021. Trading for Sam Darnold from the New York Jets came with hope rather than expectation, something that didn’t pay off as the coaching staff anticipated thanks to the same fatal flaws in the signal-caller’s game coming to the fore.

Darnold just cannot see the field effectively and there are also some footwork issues that don’t seem to be going away. Whether the USC product is past the point of no return remains to be seen, but he might get one more shot in Carolina after the Panthers picked up his fifth-year option without evaluating him in person.

Carolina Panthers could be stuck with Sam Darnold in 2022

It’s unlikely Cam Newton comes back despite the calls from fans to give the former NFL MVP a full offseason. But it’s hard to envisage a situation where Darnold has things all his own way regarding a starting spot in 2022.

Whether it’s via the draft, free agency, or the trade market, Carolina would be wise to either bring in some competition for Darnold or find a college prospect that could end up being a franchise player with additional refinement.

Things look bleak right now. But here are four quarterback situations around the NFL that might actually be worse heading into the offseason.
