Much like the situation regarding Patrick Peterson, running back David Johnson could be in the final stages of his NFL career. Considering there is a new batch of gifted college recruits entering the league every year, it remains to be seen whether the All-Pro finds another starting gig in free agency if the Houston Texans decided to go in a different direction.

Johnson was part of the ill-fated and one-sided trade that sent DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals. One of the main reasons why Bill O’Brien was removed from his duties and he has been used sparingly in a catastrophic situation over the last two years.

The 2016 season where Johnson became among the NFL’s most productive running backs was a long time ago now. A serious knee injury significantly derailed his progress the following season and he has been unable to reach these heights ever since.

Perhaps reuniting with Steve Wilks on the Carolina Panthers could be a good spot for him if the money is right. Those in power need to make sure Christian McCaffrey is healthy more often than not, meaning they have to find a back capable of generating yards in between the tackles.

Johnson may not be as explosive as he once was. But experience behind McCaffrey is needed unless Chuba Hubbard makes some incredible strides ahead of his sophomore professional campaign.
