Sean Chandler – Carolina Panthers S

Another of Matt Rhule’s former college players was brought to the Carolina Panthers last spring when Sean Chandler penned a one-year deal. The safety quickly cemented himself on the depth chart and hopes were high he could make a surprising contribution when push came to shove.

As it turned out, Chandler did get some meaningful minutes thanks to Juston Burris’ injury problems. But his poor discipline in coverage quickly saw the Temple product become exposed and targeted.

Rhule has leaned heavily on those he’s worked with previously over the last two years. Few have provided a positive contribution and even though the two are connected, bringing Chandler back on another deal wouldn’t be wise.

Chandler giving up a perfect 158.3 passer rating when targeted was proof positive of his struggles in this critical area of secondary play. His ability against the run was better, but the Panthers should make sure they strengthen on the backend either in free agency or the 2022 NFL Draft in the coming weeks.

This might be a little harsh on Chandler. But there is no room for sentiment in the NFL and the Panthers should have more enticing options available to them providing the money is right or the draft board plays out in their favor.
