Carolina Panthers cut A.J. Bouye
- 2022 cap saving – $3.47 million
There are plenty of reasons to be encouraged regarding the Carolina Panthers’ chances of high production from their cornerback unit moving forward. Young talents like Jaycee Horn, Keith Taylor Jr., and C.J. Henderson could bring their respective games on considerably following the arrival of Steve Wilks, a hugely respected coach who returns for a second stint with the franchise.
Troy Pride Jr. is returning from injury and Stantley Thomas-Oliver III continues to progress. So if either Stephon Gilmore or Donte Jackson are brought back in free agency it could leave A.J. Bouye’s status on the roster hanging by a thread.
After he was suspended for the first two games of the 2021 season, Bouye occupied the slot cornerback role more often than not and although he had some nice moments, there were plenty of inconsistencies in coverage and tackling that cannot be ignored.
Cutting Bouye this offseason can be done once Gilmore or Jackson agrees to stay. This would save the Panthers around $3.47 million that could be used to boost other areas of the roster that need substantial upgrades.
Bouye is a solid professional who is a former Pro Bowler with the Jacksonville Jaguars. But the Panthers have plenty of progressive individuals to compensate for his early release.
