Early Super Bowl LVII odds paint bleak picture for the Panthers
By Dean Jones
WynnBet’s early Super Bowl LVII odds give the Carolina Panthers almost no chance of hoisting the Vince Lombardi Trophy next year.
After the Los Angeles Rams turned over the Cincinnati Bengals during a hugely entertaining Super Bowl, it didn’t take long for oddsmakers up and down the country to start their own predictions of who will be the leading contenders in 2022. The Carolina Panthers have a significant amount of work to do in pursuit of accomplishing this feat, with head coach Matt Rhule entering the offseason firmly on the hot seat after guiding his team to 12 losses from their final 14 games.
What comes next will be extremely important. The Panthers have made some huge changes to the coaching staff since their season finale at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers came to conclusion, which could suggest that playing personnel will also shift dramatically during free agency and the 2022 NFL Draft.
Whether this will be enough to turn things around dramatically and alleviate concerns about the current regime has yet to be written. But according to the opening Super Bowl LVII odds from WynnBet, the chances of Carolina mounting a championship run are slim at best.
Carolina Panthers have little chance of winning the Super Bowl
The Panthers are currently listed at +7500 (bet $100 to win $7500) to take home the title for the first time in franchise history. Only four NFL teams have lower odds and Carolina’s chances are tied with the Atlanta Falcons, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Pittsburgh Steelers at the present time.
WynnBet’s odds listed the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills as the two early favorites at +750 (bet $100 to win $750). Although there should be plenty of chopping and changing in the coming weeks depending on which coveted players go where in free agency, the draft, or even the trade market.
This bleak picture should not come as a surprise to anyone associated with the Panthers. There are simply too many questions at vital positional groups and within key individuals behind the scenes to suggest otherwise, in all honesty.
That could change if the Panthers can somehow pull off some big signings or even convince a veteran quarterback to come on board after Sam Darnold failed to produce the goods. But there isn’t much in the way of leeway when it comes to rash decisions and any further failures regarding personnel could see a complete reset this time next year.
In truth, nobody is expecting the Panthers to be contending for a Super Bowl. All fans want to see is genuine progress and hope for the future, which was almost non-existent in 2021.
If they can do this, then it’s a solid foundation from which to build. But with $17.86 million in cap space and just one draft pick in the top-100, it is a challenge of epic proportions.
The stakes could not be much higher for Carolina in 2022. A crossroads campaign that could literally go either way right now.
Aiming high is always a good thing, no matter how unrealistic it might be. However, only the eternal optimist would be placing their hard-earned money on the Panthers taking home the crown next season.
