Grading Matt Rhule’s new coaching hires for the Panthers
By Jason Huber
Kevin M. Gilbride and Joe Dailey – Carolina Panthers TE and WR coaches
- Grade: B
Both of these roles weren’t supposed to be open but former tight ends coach Brian Angelichio and wide receivers coach Frisman Jackson each left for the same role elsewhere, leaving Matt Rhule with two more hires to make.
Kevin M. Gilbride is an in-house hire, acting as a defensive analyst last season with the Carolina Panthers. He will certainly have his work cut out for him as the team hasn’t accomplished much from a production standpoint since legendary tight end Greg Olsen left town.
Gilbride has experience with the Giants in the same role and was the wide receivers coach when New York won the Super Bowl in 2012. Based on his resume, there is plenty of more potential for the hire and it wasn’t a bad idea for Rhule to simply promote him.
In the wide receiver room, Joe Dailey will take over a corps led by D.J. Moore and Robby Anderson. The Panthers should also look to strengthen their pass-catching options during free agency or the 2022 NFL Draft to further assist his cause.
Dailey has never coached at the NFL level so this will be new to him. But he’s young and has plenty of experience at the college level coaching – even though this hasn’t been the recipe for success regarding previous appointments made by Rhule since taking over.
