Panthers 7-round 2022 NFL mock draft: Trench warfare edition
By Dean Jones
Carolina Panthers select Chris Owens at No. 244
The Carolina Panthers took an Alabama offensive lineman in the later rounds in 2021 and might contemplate doing the same again if Chris Owens is still on the board. Deonte Brown’s weight issues caused a dramatic slide following an original second-round projection from most analysts, which reared their head as a rookie and resulted in the mammoth guard enjoying little to no meaningful action until the season finale at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Owens might be coming from a prestigious program, but his chances of being a Day 1 starter appear remote. He does have the versatility to play almost anywhere on the offensive line – which should help his attempts to make it at the next level – but there are some clear flaws that need some significant work once the prospect arrives in the pros.
Pass protection seems to be Owens’ biggest issue. Finishing off plays more efficiently is another area of his game that could use some polishing.
However, he does have some good traits that are well worth a look, at the very least.
The Panthers have a lot of deadwood to shift from their offensive line depth chart this offseason. So there should be room for a development project who could force his way into the rotation at some stage.
Owens has to prove his capabilities and willingness to be coached during the evaluation process. Much will also depend on what Nick Saban says when teams seek his counsel.
