5 returners the Carolina Panthers must consider in 2022 free agency
By Dean Jones
Which kick returners should the Carolina Panthers consider when the all-important free agency period begins this spring?
One key positional area that sometimes gets overlooked is the kick returner. The Carolina Panthers gave Alex Erickson this responsibility in 2021 and they could go in a different direction this time around after special teams coordinator Chase Blackburn was fired and replaced by the vastly experienced Chris Tabor.
Tabor comes from the Chicago Bears and has enjoyed a wealth of success in recent years. Including coaching Pro Bowl kick returners in each of the last four seasons.
That is no mean feat and something that could help the Panthers considerably. Carolina could see more of Shi Smith and perhaps even D.J. Moore on returns, but it might be worth exploring the free-agent market for some options if the price is right.
With this in mind, here are five kick returners the Panthers must consider in 2022 free agency.
Kick Returner No. 1
Carolina Panthers must consider Tavon Austin
Although Tavon Austin might be a little long in the tooth now as far as his NFL career is concerned, the tricky weapon could be a nice addition to the Carolina Panthers. He boasts proven production in the return game and might also be able to make his presence felt in the passing attack should opportunities arise throughout the campaign.
Austin was a prolific kick returner during his early days with the Los Angeles Rams and even though he’s been used sparingly in this category in recent years, the No. 8 overall selection in 2013 could be an upgrade on Alex Erickson.
This is also unlikely to cost a significant amount. Another important element to consider with the Panthers having just $17.86 million in cap space right now.
