Carolina Panthers’ predicament with Sam Darnold

Trading three draft picks to acquire Sam Darnold from the New York Jets was one thing, but picking up his fifth-year option before he got in the building was a cataclysmic error that threatens to hold the Carolina Panthers back this offseason. Those in power have obviously decided the former USC star is not up to the required standard and much like Teddy Bridgewater last year, they are clearly prepared to move on at what could be a great financial expense.

There were some on social media that speculated whether Darnold could be included in any trade package for Kirk Cousins. However, those who think the new regime within the Minnesota Vikings will start off their tenure by gambling on the No. 3 overall selection in 2018 will be out of luck.

General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah is widely respected in league circles and has waited a long time for this opportunity. So jeopardizing this by bringing Darnold on board should not enter his train of thought.

Perhaps the Panthers can get another team to take the plunge. Although one suspects they will have to eat a large portion of his salary as they did with Bridgewater when he was traded to the Denver Broncos for a sixth-round pick.

This is a complication that could have been avoided. If it prevents Carolina from securing a quarterback during the offseason, they only have themselves to blame.
