5 difficult questions facing the Carolina Panthers in 2022 free agency
By Dean Jones
Do the Carolina Panthers keep Donte Jackson or Stephon Gilmore?
Considering that finances are at a premium for the Carolina Panthers in free agency, it’s highly unlikely that the primary decision-makers can keep both Stephon Gilmore and Donte Jackson on the books. The roster does have some exciting young talent within their cornerback room, but extending one of their pending free agents is absolutely essential ahead of a crucial third campaign for head coach Matt Rhule.
This is a tricky situation with many layers. Jackson is the younger player who might have his best years ahead of him – but staying on the field is a problem and there are some errors in coverage to also consider despite his elite speed and improving ability against the run.
Gilmore was an in-season acquisition via trade from the New England Patriots and looked back to his old self after returning from a torn quad. The All-Pro and former NFL Defensive Player of the Year would also provide an exceptional veteran presence that the likes of Jaycee Horn, C.J. Henderson, and Keith Taylor Jr. could learn from during an important stage of their development.
Much will depend on the money both want when it’s time to begin negotiations. Playing closer to home suits Gilmore, which could see the South Carolina product take a small discount to extend his stay.
Only time will tell, obviously. But it’s an extremely difficult decision all things considered and one that the Panthers must get right in no uncertain terms.
