Carolina Panthers are a long way from contending

Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper has yet to enjoy a winning season since buying the team from Jerry Richardson for an astonishing $2.2 billion. His plans away from the gridiron are impressive and industry-leading, but all this will count for nothing if results don’t improve on the field.

Judging by last season, the Panthers becoming true contenders seems some way off. Three successive campaigns with five wins indicate almost no progress has been made despite the change of coaching and it’s going to take a turnaround of epic proportions to convince people Carolina can fight for legitimacy after languishing in mediocrity for so long.

Last season saw the Panthers have to settle for underperforming free agents such as Cam Erving and Pat Elflein. Although the addition of Haason Reddick was a real coup at a bargain price.

After things turned so sour in 2021 following a 3-0 start, one suspects the top names won’t be banging down Carolina’s door for an offer. This will restrict the ability to strengthen problem areas and could jeopardize their chances during a tough-looking schedule next season.

Convincing veterans with proven production to join the Panthers once the free agency period begins is a hard sell. A reflection of how things are currently transpiring and something Tepper is clearly letting happen right in front of his eyes.
