All hope is not lost regarding Cam Newton extension in 2022

There might be a chance quarterback Cam Newton returns to the Carolina Panthers in 2022, according to a recent report from Pro Football Network.

Just when it seemed as if Cam Newton would be riding off into the sunset once again, a report from Tony Pauline from Pro Football Network indicated that it might not be a done deal just yet. The quarterback made a sensational return to the Carolina Panthers prior to the team’s Week 10 win at the Arizona Cardinals and although results didn’t improve all that much, there could be benefits to bringing the former NFL MVP back and giving him a full offseason to familiarize himself with new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo’s scheme.

Newton remains beloved by the team’s fanbase and clearly had a significantly positive impression on the locker room. However, the signal-caller was less than impressed by the attitude of some based on his reflective comments during an emotionally charged exit presser.

It was widely expected that Newton would depart the Panthers. Sam Darnold is under contract with a guaranteed $18.85 million after those in power triggered his fifth-year option, with backup P.J. Walker also given a one-year deal to fight for a roster spot in training camp.

Carolina Panthers could re-sign Cam Newton if they cannot land a QB via trade

General manager Scott Fitterer and head coach Matt Rhule were both highly complimentary of Newton once the season came to a conclusion and didn’t shut down a return. However, even though Pauline states it is a possibility, there is also a good chance Carolina aims to land another big fish such as Deshaun Watson in the trade market providing his legal issues conclude in a fashion that is satisfactory to the league.

"“The Carolina Panthers are another team in immediate need of a plug-and-play quarterback. If they can bring one in via trade, they will do it in a heartbeat. Head coach Matt Rhule’s job is on the line, and he must win this season. If they can’t make a big move for a signal-caller, I’m told Cam Newton is still an option for the team. The Panthers signed Newton in Week 10 last year, and he went on to start five games, winning none of them.”"

This still seems like a last resort based on Pauline’s comments. But moving forward with Darnold as the starter is not going to do down well and could even end up costing Rhule his job when it’s all said and done.

Newton brings proven production and holds his teammates accountable. It’s no surprise that players like Robby Anderson gravitated towards the former No. 1 overall selection almost as soon as he came back – and this would be another benefit to handing the signal-caller an extension.

Much would depend on the money involved. Newton also stated he wouldn’t be willing to sit as a backup for a “five-win team” – so some guarantees would need to be made regarding his status before this becomes attractive for both parties.

The Panthers are clearly going to be aggressive in pursuit of finally getting things right under center. But it’s easy to forget that continuity is a hugely important factor and something Carolina has been devoid of at the most important position on the field under the current regime.

Something has to give.

Perhaps building around Newton for a year before drafting a quarterback from a strong class in 2023 is the right recipe for success. But the Panthers’ current decision-making process is erratic, to put it mildly.

This will be a quickly evolving situation that is going to pick up speed once preliminary discussions begin at the NFL Scouting Combine. Newton will be waiting for the call, either way, but he would be wise to go into any potential negotiations with his eyes wide open.

Carolina is not a franchise on the cusp of something great. Newton will know that full-well after spending some time within the set-up last season – but opportunities for a starting job could be severely limited elsewhere.

Last season seemed so surreal when Newton patched things up and made his triumphant return. Even if it doesn’t amount to anything more than a short-term stay, fans will always have those moments to treasure forever.
