Carolina Panthers 7-round 2022 NFL mock draft: Pre-Combine edition
By Dean Jones
Carolina Panthers select Bailey Zappe
The rumor mill is already churning at a rapid rate where the quarterback position is concerned. Sam Darnold’s first season with the Carolina Panthers was a complete disaster and the team picking up his fifth-year option has caused more self-inflicted complications they could have done without.
This is not the strongest group of signal-callers entering from the college ranks this year. One could make a case that none should be taken in the top-20 and probably why the Panthers are once again going to be aggressive in the trade market in pursuit of an upgrade.
However, with Cam Newton out of contract and P.J. Walker fighting for a roster spot, drafting a project with solid intangibles could also be something the Panthers consider. Bailey Zappe was nothing short of phenomenal for Western Kentucky in 2021, but whether the lack of true competition will work against him remains to be seen.
On the face of things, Zappe has staring-caliber traits. He is an intelligent presence under center, with his arm strength and accuracy also something that should make the Panthers and others monitor his progress through the assessment process closely.
Zappe isn’t the most athletic quarterback and his decision-making has been called into question on occasion. But with Ben McAdoo and Sean Ryan on Carolina’s coaching staff, this is a solid place to land for a prospect looking to hone their craft initially.
