Carolina Panthers should avoid Kirk Cousins

There were reports that surfaced last week about the Carolina Panthers calling the Minnesota Vikings regarding the availability of Kirk Cousins. Although this didn’t amount to anything as the new regime moves forward with the Michigan State product, this is a fluid situation that might change once general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has a chance to fully evaluate his options.

Cousins has been the subject of some undue criticism throughout his career. The signal-caller has all the talent in the world, but some hesitancy in key moments was a real complication once upon a time that gave the player a narrative he hasn’t been able to shake just yet.

There is little doubt that Cousins represents an upgrade on Sam Darnold. But it’s not that simple, in all honesty.

One main complication is Cousins’ salary-cap hit, which currently stands at $45 million on the final year of his deal. Given how much money Minnesota needs to get rid of to comply with cap regulations, convincing them to take on a portion of this with any potential trade is highly unlikely and the Panthers aren’t exactly flush with cash themselves.

The chances of Carolina landing someone like Aaron Rodgers or Deshaun Watson is remote. This might lead them to another gamble on a second-tier or below player at the position – which Cousins undoubtedly is at this stage of his career.

The Vikings would also want some top-end draft capital from any suitor. Another reason why this trade should be avoided.
