Carolina Panthers QB position is up for grabs
The biggest question mark this offseason is how the Carolina Panthers will manage the starting quarterback position. Scott Fitterer made it known on Wednesday that the position is “open.”
Sam Darnold will be under contract in 2022 after Carolina picked up his fifth-year option last season when they traded for him. But after a poor first season with the team, Fitterer seems to be exploring his options in free agency, the draft, and the trade market.
The door isn’t closed for Darnold. However, Fitterer said there has to be more stability from whoever the Panthers choose to go with under center.
Besides Darnold, P.J. Walker is the only other quarterback under contract and he’s more of a backup that might not even be on the final 53-man roster.
Fitterer said the team has done its due diligence when it comes to what signal-callers will be available in the draft. But he also noted that the offensive line is a huge need as well.
When it comes to Cam Newton, Fitterer said the door isn’t closed for him, either after bringing him back last season.
"“We’re still open to Cam. But again, we want to have that conversation with him directly.”"
Many fans don’t want to see Darnold get another shot next year. Even though Fitterer said he can still get the starting job, it seems unlikely.
