Why should the Carolina Panthers consider giving former MVP quarterback Cam Newton a new contract through the 2022 season?

Although it was initially perceived that Cam Newton’s second stint with the Carolina Panthers would be a short-term arrangement, the prospect of the quarterback getting an extension this offseason hasn’t been ruled out entirely. The former NFL MVP’s return before the Week 10 win at the Arizona Cardinals sent the fanbase into a level of excitement not seen before during the Matt Rhule era and even though this didn’t bring much joy from a results standpoint, it was an extremely difficult situation to come into.

Newton might not be the force of old and probably went into this with his eyes wide open. His reflective and often nostalgic manner during an emotional exit presser indicated the end was near, but the Panthers aren’t rich in assets to find an upgrade on Sam Darnold, who failed to meet expectations following his trade from the New York Jets.

Most fans would love to see Newton back. They’ve idolized the signal-caller from the moment he stepped into the organization and will continue to back the iconic figure long after he retires.

That might not be just yet, however. And here are four reasons why the Panthers should re-sign Newton this offseason if the money is right for both parties.

Cam Newton brings accountability

Accountability is something that was sorely lacking from the Carolina Panthers last season. From John Miller’s infamous “sacks happen” to Dennis Daley’s “not my job” quotes, veteran players and head coach Matt Rhule were never willing to accept blame for the mess that was unfolding.

Cam Newton changed all that in an instant. He has never thrown anyone under the bus, holding himself and others responsible for what transpires throughout the week and on a game day, which came across in no uncertain terms despite things not improving from a results standpoint.

Newton indicated that some members of the locker room were not completely bought in last season, which surprised absolutely nobody. If the quarterback was extended, then there could be a complete shift in attitude depending on which players come in during free agency and the draft.
