Carolina Panthers should consider Dont’a Hightower

This would be a major coup by the Carolina Panthers. There aren’t many linebackers in the league that has accomplished more than Dont’a Hightower and even though he’s heading into the last years of his playing days, he could be a shrewd signing if there is a mutual interest.

Much was expected of Hightower when the New England Patriots took the talented prospect at No. 25 overall in the 2012 NFL Draft. But he has more than lived up to this billing en route to three Super Bowl championships and two Pro Bowl selections.

Hightower could be let go by the Patriots this offseason if terms cannot be agreed upon surrounding a new deal. The veteran will have more than his fair share of suitors in free agency, but this would fill an immediate need for the Panthers, to put it mildly.

The presence of former teammate Stephon Gilmore on the roster – providing he is extended – could tip the scales in their favor. Both players contributed significantly to the success of New England’s defense during the 2010s and a potential reunion could bring about further production in a different environment.

At this stage of Hightower’s career, he’s probably looking for a substantial role with the promise of contending right now. Judging by the deficiencies in Carolina over the last few years, it’s unlikely the Alabama product would be convinced.
