What were some critical observations regarding quarterback Malik Willis at the NFL Scouting Combine and how could this impact the Carolina Panthers?

The Carolina Panthers and others across the league were keeping a close eye on developments at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine as the quarterbacks, wide receivers, and tight ends strutted their stuff on Day 1 of on-field drills. General manager Scott Fitterer declared earlier in the week that the position is “open” after Sam Darnold failed to produce consistently last season, with nothing seemingly off the table in relation to a potential upgrade right now.

One player that had more focus on him than most was Malik Willis. The Liberty product has some exciting physical attributes that could transition well to the next level over time, although he might need to develop further before assuming command of starting responsibilities.

Carolina has Darnold under contract for a guaranteed $18.85 million next year. P.J. Walker will fight for a roster spot in training camp and the Panthers haven’t ruled out the possibility of Cam Newton coming back, either.

Stability is key moving forward. How it comes is irrelevant and unless the Panthers can figure this out, they might find life difficult once again in 2022.

Willis is a polarizing figure that represents a feast or famine pickup and especially at the top-end of the draft. The intangibles are there for all to see, but there is just no telling how long it’s going to take for the prospect to become a productive NFL starter.

And obviously, this is not on Carolina’s side after years of languishing in mediocrity.

Without further ado, here are four crucial observations from Willis at the combine and how this might have altered the Panthers’ thought process.
