4 pros and cons to the Carolina Panthers signing Mitchell Trubisky
By Dean Jones
Carolina Panthers could still draft a QB
Trading for an elite quarterback such as Russell Wilson or Deshaun Watson sounds nice, but the chances of the Carolina Panthers actually pulling this off appear remote. That’s where the talk of potentially drafting Kenny Pickett or Malik Willis is coming from and signing Mitchell Trubisky wouldn’t alter this option in the slightest providing the organization could move Sam Darnold on somehow.
Trubisky would be a gamble. So treating his first season as a bridge scenario with either Pickett or Willis waiting in the wings could be a solid move by the front office.
Of course, passing on an elite offensive lineman such as Charles Cross or Ikem Ekwounu wouldn’t be wise at the present time. Although priorities could change once reinforcements are acquired in free agency.
There is no guarantee Trubisky would be anything more than an above-average quarterback at best based on his track record. And he’ll always be remembered for being the guy taken by the Chicago Bears instead of Patrick Mahomes or Watson.
Whether the Panthers can justify selecting Pickett or Willis at No. 6 overall is unclear. Both signal-callers are generating some substantial momentum in recent weeks and if Trubisky’s contract demands are nothing more than around $10 million per year, this scenario becomes likelier if Darnold is shipped out.
