4 pros and cons to the Carolina Panthers signing Mitchell Trubisky
By Dean Jones
Mitchell Trubisky might be broken
It was probably best for Mitchell Trubisky’s career that he accepted a backup role with the Buffalo Bills in 2021 after the Chicago Bears decided to cut their losses with one of their biggest-ever draft busts. But in truth, he might not have had many alternatives.
The league will chew you up quickly if confidence slips. That proved to be the case with Trubisky in Chicago and even though the Bills were very complimentary regarding his approach and production, his next starting chance will be a last chance saloon situation.
Wherever Trubisky ends up, it won’t take long to figure out whether his confidence has returned or is now past the point of no return. The Carolina Panthers have a lot on the line next season after yet another five-win campaign and acquiring a signal-caller that could be broken is a monumental choice with potentially grave consequences.
Players like Trubisky always get a second or third chance. That’s why ruling out a potential Sam Darnold cannot be ruled out entirely, either.
However, it would have to be a turnaround of epic proportions for the player to finally prove beyond all doubt he can become a productive NFL starter.
This is a precarious situation and one the Panthers must get right. Whether Matt Rhule is willing to bet his job on Trubisky is another matter.
